China’s Vision for UN Tourism: A Dependent “Dear Leader” in Charge of 1.4 Billion Tourists?
Should Zurab Pololikashvili run for a third term as UN-Tourism Secretary General? Email your response to ed****@et********.com .
Premier Xi Jinping has led the People’s Republic of China since 2013, and Zurab Pololikashvili has led the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) since 2018.
China has more than 1.4 billion people, and the world had more than 1.4 billion people who traveled in 2024. China and UN-Tourism have a lot in common. An autocratic leader as Secretary General in UN-Tourism, supported by China, would create a dependency along the lines of the Belt and Road Initiative, and may be the only way to win for a third term, most UN-Tourism members now understand is more than just unusual.
